President Obama has awarded the Presidential Unit Citation to A Troop 1st Squadron of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment for their actions in Vietnam on March 26th 1970.
A Troop was recognized because of its rescue of a unit which had stumbled upon a large NVA force and was subsequently engaged in a fire fight which they needed to be rescued from.
From what I could figure out from reading the words of the citation A Troop put themselves at great risk just to reach the trapped unit. After they made it to the area they repelled the attack of the opposing force completely.
President Obama spoke of the fact that there are so many actions of bravery that history will never know about just because they were never told. There are so many sacrifices, rescues, incidents of our fellow countrymen giving their lives to save others that we will never even hear about.
The greatest baseball catch that I ever saw bar none was on a field in my hometown. It was made by one of my childhood friends but no one other than we who saw it will ever know about it. This is part of the beauty of a custom military ring. Just like the Presidential Citation it tells a story about more than one event at the same time. The citation is a unit award so within the award there were many individual actions. Your military ring tells the story of your entire military career. We honor all members of this unit and thank you for your service to this country.
