The Purpose of the Submarine

submarineThe official definition of a submarine is a watercraft capable of independant operations below the surface of the ocean. The first use of a submarine in warfare that I know of is the USS Hunley during the Civil War. Since then submarines have been adapted to perform many various functions such as attacking ships, or conversely protecting ships by operating as part of a screening force. They are also used for blocade running, reconaissance, insertion of special operations soldiers, and direct land attack via launching cruise missiles, or nuclear missiles.

I know that in order to become a submariner you have to exhibit psychological charistics which show that you can adapt to being submerged under water in the tight space of a submarine for an extended period of time. Personally I don’t know if I have the cahunas to do it. I have met several submariners in my lifetime and all of the ones that I met were not big fellows. I know that to be a submariner you can’t be over a certain height but I’m not sure of the physical qualifications. We have never sold any of these individuals a Submariner’s ring but we could fix them up with one if we had to.
