USMC Involvement in Somalia

Baidoa 1992 Somalia.jpgThe operation that this post refers to is Operation Restore Hope which was conducted in the southern part of Somalia from December 1992 to May 1993.

This operation began with the intention of enforcing UN resolution 794 which sought to restore order to the country which was (and still is) in a state of turmoil. The Somali govenment has lost control of the country. Different areas were controlled by whichever warlord happened to be the strongest in that area. There is little hope for the general population of that country. This operation sought to help the civilian population by enforcing the safe distribution of foods and supplies to them. The problem was that the warlords were taking the supplies which were intended for the civilian population.

The marines who participated in this exercise were a part of a UN Task Force. Even though this operation started well it detoriated into the mess that we saw chronicled on the movie “BlackHawk Down.” Take it from the custom military ring man, if our objectives had been just a little bit different in that area at that time I believe tat the outcome would have been much more positive.
