This term is another term for surprise attack. The purpose of this type of operation is to weaken or severely cripple your enemy when war is inevitable. This type of operation can be either a boom or a bust. The most important thing about it is that it must be a total surprise. If you lose the element of surprise it will backfire on you. Especially if your enemy is stronger than you. This type of attack is normally conducted by the weaker military force to even the playing field before the war starts.

Two examples of this type of operation in history are Operation Desert Focus which was conducted by Israel at the start of the Six day war in 1967, and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

During Operation Desert Focus the Israeli Air Force effectively destroyed the Egyptian Air Force before it could even get off of the ground, along with inflicting severe damage to 18 Egyptian airfields. It also severely crippled the Jordanian and Syrian Air Forces in the same day. This operation was the single greatest event which influenced the outcome of the war. I believe that this is the primary reason for the Israeli victory.

The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 was a surprise to the US and it did severely cripple the US Pacific Fleet, but it was ill conceived in that there were no follow on objectives planned by the Japanese. This had the effect of drawing the United States into the war which it ultimately won.

So grasshopper, the moral of this story is: If you must hit your enemy don’t pussy foot around. Hit him as hard as you can and keep hitting him until he stops moving. Otherwise he may come back on you and clean your clock. This has been another bit of advice coming from the military ring man.
