What Does the Term Deck Mean?

deckIf you are not sure grasshopper let me educate you. This term is very familiar to our Navy readers but to us landlubbers more education is needed.

The official definition of a “Deck” is a permanent covering over a compartment or hull of a ship. The primary deck is the top deck of the hull and serves as the primary working surface. Every other working surface of the ship is also called a deck whether it is located above or below the primary deck.

The main purpose of the primary deck is for the structural support of the hull of the ship itself. Protection from the elements is the secondary purpose. It also serves to support the weight of people and equipment, and it serves as an equipment platform for specialized equipment. Now check this out. The desk has various parts some of which are the; 1) Scantling or topside which is the actual material that the deck is composed of. The type and weight of the scantling may vary depending on the functions accomplished on the deck. 2) Fittings which are built onto the deck for various purposes. There are also numerous other parts which are too many to try to talk about in this short post.

When a ship or boat has more than one level each level is referred to as a deck and the floor of each deck is known as the sole. Decks can be named and or numbered according to location and function. This is necessary on larger boats or ships with multiple decks.

Many times we are not familiar with the terminology that other services may use. All of this was new to me since I was not affiliated with the Navy during my time in the Armed Forces. When you design a custon Navy Ring you display your own unique set of experiences that are exclusive to your time in service and in doing so you educate those of us who were never affliated with your branch of service.
