A military convoy is a group of military vehicles which travels together for mutual support. Convoys can be as simple as just a few vehicles traveling together or as complicated as a carrier group or an armored task force.
The three types of convoys which come to mind when we use the term are aerial, ground, and naval.
In any convoy the vehicles are arranged where they can best give mutual protection and support to all of the other vehicles in the convoy. if the convoy is exceptionally large it will require the use of screening forces. The screening force or forces have the job of protecting the flank of the convoy against attack. They will consist of vehicles which are faster than normal because they have to cover more ground. They may also have to fight running gun battles in order to protect the slower more vulnerable vehicles from detection and attack. Screening vehicles try to not get bogged down in a fight but to keep the enemy from the more vulnerable vehicles in the convoy. They also serve to warn the main convoy of the enemy presence so that the commander can either attack or take evasive action.
There are many reasons for convoy operations but the major reason is to move into battle. All branches of military service use convoys as our army, navy, and air force military ring customers know. All of you military ring customers out there who have been involved in a large military convoy know that timing of movement is critical and precise.
