Smoke Grenades

smoke grenadesThe smoke grenade is a valuable tool in the military and is handy for many practical uses. Some of the ways that I have used them and I’m sure many of you custom military ring customers have too are for signaling, marking targets or landing zones. One thing that many civilians are probably not aware of is that smoke is very useful for command and control of military operations.

Smoke comes in different colors and thecolors may be given a significant meaning. Members of a unit may know that if they see blue smoke during combat it may mean for them to break contact. Another color may be a signal to change direction etc.

There are two basic types of military smoke grenades, potassium chlorate and white phosphorus. The potassium chlorate grenade releases a colored dye as it burns and the white phosphorus explodes and burns on contact with the air. White phosphorus is dangerous and will burn you severely if it gets on your skin. It is used on enemy troops and positions. Whenever you use military smoke you must take the direction of the wind into consideration. If you don’t account for the wind speed and direction you might cause yourself a serious problem.
