Light Infantry units don’t posses the firepower or lethality of heavy mechanized infantry but they do have other distinct advantages. For example they can be inserted behind enemy lines where they can operate for extended periods of time without being detected. They can also operate in conditions or terrain which might bog or hinder heavy units.
One example of a light Infantry unit is the 10th Mountain Division. I remember when we operated with them as a task force. We were the heavy (24th ) Infantry Division and they were the light. The biggest thing that I remember about them is that they were always walking while we spent a lot of time maintaining our equipment.
The Infantry ring customer can use the military ring to distinguish between light and heavy but it is very rare that they do so.
