Precision guided munitions are a recent technological advent which takes warfare to a whole new level.
Precision guided munitions (PGM’s) may be smart bombs and missiles, GBU’s (guided bomb units) etc. The definition of a PGM is a guided weapon which is capable of hitting a specific target with minimal damage to objects or people who happen to be close to the target. In other words we have taken weapons which were once known as area weapons and turned them into point weapons. They don’t just land close to the target and get effects by massive explosions, they get results with direct hits.
You Custom military ring customers from the Operation Desert Storm era may remember the advent of the smart bomb in that war. You military ring customers from Operation Iraqi Freedon know that smart bombs were very widely used at that time. During Desert Storm 10% of the bombs dropped were smart bombs while about 90% were smart bombs during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
One major advantage of guided bombs and missiles is that you get more results with fewer munitions. If you are using bombers to drop bombs you send fewer bombers and their crews into harms way.
