What Do We Mean by Irregular Warfare?

Highlight for Album: Swiss SecurityIrregular warfare is the type of warfare conducted by irregular units. An irregular unit is not a part of any formal military organization so they don’t operate according to a tactical standard operating procedure. They wouldn’t be military ring customers because there is no structure that they can relate to.

They basically have to find watever works for them and use it to their advantage. They are not as well trained, equipped, or supplied as a regular unit. They also don’t have the same type of heirarhy as a regular Army unit so they may be less identifiable.

A good example of irregular units are the groups of fighters controlled by warlords in Somalia and Afghanistan. They would get together and fight but thay had to develop tactics as they went along. As irregulars fight and survive more battles they begin to look and operate more like regulars in that thet develop organization and structure.
