A skirmish is described as a minor fight. They are more often chance encounters by small moving forces. The forces involved in the skirmish are not necessarily interested in holding or taking ground. One or both of them is more likely moving and in most cases they just happened to run into each other.
They precede the major battles because they are normally fought by screening or covering forces which operate in the areas on the fringes of the main battle forces. If you happen to be one of our custom military ring customers who fought in Operation Desert Storm you will remember that all of the skirmishes took place right after allied forces moved into their battle positions. Keep in mind also that skirmishes can take place between planes, ships, subs, etc. They don’t have to necessarily have to be fought by ground forces.
