Flogging was never emphasized as a type of punishment in the US military, but other militaries have used it throughout the years.
There are many different instruments used to administer this type of punishment but the bottom line is you beat the transgressor in some way, form, or fashion.
Flogging was typically administered to varying degrees depending on the offense committed but I have read about soldiers being given hundreds of licks for some infractions. The British Navy widely administered flogging at one time but eventually outlawed its use.
Many times the offender would have to be hospitalized for weeks after receiving this punishment which in my mind kind of makes it a ridiculous punishment because you would lose the needed asset after flogging him. http://www.militaryringexpress.com
