What is the Global Positioning System?

gpsI have found the Global Positioning System to be a great benefit to me in many situations. I heard of it first during the first Persian Gulf war. It was new to us and we had to be trained on its use. It was used for military applications only at that time as all military ring customers who were on active duty then well know.

It is widely used in civilian life and is an invaluable asset to the people who use it.

The Global Positioning System is a three pronged system consisting of 24 to 32 sattelites in medium earth orbit, 4 control stations on the earth, and every GPS that is owned by the military and civilian customers. it is a US space based satellite navigation system. It is handy and reliable. I have used it to navigate on the ocean, on the highways, and on land and it has never let me down. It is good however to maintain your basic map reading skills just in case you bust or lose your GPS or the batteries die on you.
