The USS West Virginia is an Ohio class nuclear powered submarine. It carries about 24 Trident II SLBM’s and is capable of extended operations. This sub has 2 seperate crews which switch out about every 100 days.
My Navy submariner ring customers can add much more than I can to this but these submarines carry the majority of our strategic nuclear missiles. The missiles are not preset but I imagine they can be set depending on the subs location when the launch order comes. They can be programmed very rapidly if need be.
These submarines are stealthy which make them an excellent deterrent to nuclear attack and an offensive weapon which is almost impossible to counter. Weapons of this caliber are effective in many different ways. One way that they deter war is that the enemy knows that if he is to attack us he must be able to account for their whereabouts and their capabilities.
