The UGM probably means unguided missile. If I had to guess that’s what my guess would be. If I,m wrong I need for some of my US Navy custom military ringĀ folk to straighten me out. The Trident II is a submarine launched ballistic missile which was designed to replace the Trident I. It is more sophisticated than the Trident but I don’t know enough about it to tell you how.
It was designed as a response to Russia’s improvements in some of its ballistic missile programs.
Submarine launched ballistic missiles are a major threat to our enemies because they can be launched from just about anywhere in the ocean without warning.
Submarine missile launches remind me of our Armys MLRS tactics. The MLRS will move to a launch position, launch its payload and be gone before the enemy has a chance to react. The only defense to prevent the launch of these missiles is to find the sub and destroy it before it can launch the missile at you. The launch is very visible as with the MLRS but by the time you get a fix on the location of launch it is too late.
