I am of the opinion that maybe we should go back to the military draft. Everyone should get an idea of what our combat soldiers have to go through. Maybe it will give some of our citizens a new appreciation of the freedom that they enjoy and take for granted. Maybe there wouldn’t be so much trash talking if all of us had to spend a year in a third world country and live as some of the people there have to. I have been in countries where items that we throw into the garbage such as beer cans and old cardboard are used for something (like patching up your wall) by the people of other countries. I have seen people who were happy to get a half rotten tomato and a stale crust of bread for breakfast and ate it and enjoyed it.
If you had to spend months in the Arabian desert where temperatures regularily get into the 140′s with no ice you would learn to really appreciate a cold glass of water.
Maybe some of our young generation (and older) would appreciate a 40 hour work week if they had to work for 48 to 72 hours continuously with 2 or 3 hours of sleep during the whole time and little or no food. All of this not knowing when you will see rest or sleep.
A day in the office when the heat or AC is not working will not seem so bad after a week of sleeping on top of the ice while being hungry, funky, tired, cold, smelly, dirty, scared, and sleepy at the same time. Did I mention COLD. These are the memories that my military ring evoke whenever I look at it. For all of the young gansters who want to be hard, live the life of a combat soldier and then I will be impressed. Don’t try to stare me down because I won’t play that game with you. Earn your combat soldiers ring and combat pay then come and talk to me.
One thing that I have learned from the military is that even the most disobedient person becomes a tame puppy when his life is on the line. The fear of dying will make you obey any order given. Maybe some of us should be deprived of the finer things in life before we learn to appreciate it.
