SFC Jared C Monti was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama recently. The Medal of Honor was awarded because of action which took place in Afghanistan during a firefight with about 50 insurgents. SFC Monti and his patrol were ambushed near the border of Pakistan. Isn’t it strange how so much of the action of this war is taking place near Pakistan.
SFC Monti was a member of the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Squadron 71st Cavalry. He was cited for walking directly into heavy enemy fire to rescue a wounded soldier. SFC Monti had called for artillery support but realized that the wounded soldier was lying in the expected impact area of the artillery. He waded into concentrated enemy fire at least three times before he was mortally wounded.
This story is a testament to our soldiers serving in Operation Enduring Freedom and elsewhere around the globe. Many of them have commemorated their time served in Afghanistan with an Operation Enduring Freedom Ring. The medal of honor seems to be completely justified in this case and our condolences go out to SFC Monti’s friends and family.
