The P-40 Warhawk

P-40The P-40 Warhawk was introduced to our Air Corps  during WWII. This plane is made famous by its shark mouth logo which you have probably seen on war movies.
The P-40 was not as agile or fast as many of the enemy fighters that it faced. It lacked in speed and mobility and its pilots had to be trained in tactics which would keep them out of a turning dogfight. They also could not count on it to out speed their opponents.
The P-40 pilot had to learn to use the three major advantages of this aircraft to defeat its adversaries. He had to use the dive speed of the P-40 to outdive his adversary. He couldn’t out climb or out maneuver any eneny aircraft so he had to either fight in the right circumstances or abandon the dogfight.
Another advantage of the P-40 was its superior firepower. Its six 50 caliber machine guns would put a serious hurt on any of the adversaries that it had to face. The pilot would do better if he could draw first blood so he had to fight in a way which enabled him to do so.
The last big advantage that this airplane had was its ruggedness. It could take punishment from other fighters of the day and still survive. So if you had to take a punch or two in order to dish out a haymaker you had the ability to do so.
I refer to this airplane as the Mike Tyson of fighters of its time because it was tough and rugged. The sharktooth design on its fuselage made it an intimidating sight, so when you saw it coming you knew that you had your work cut out for you. Do you remember how Tyson used to enter the ring in all black and no robe or socks. He had the intimidation thing down to a science. The legend of this rugged airplane is just one of many that the military ring man intends to bring to you in the future.
