The UN is Increasing the Number of Troops that It has in Somalia

The UN will increase the number of troops tht it has in Somalia from 8,000 to about 12,000. The reason is that the Somali Government is so weak that it has to be propped up in order to maintain the small amount of control that it has in the capitol. It only controls a few blocks of real estate and is desperately hanging on to that.

The current government is called the Transitional Federal Government and is backed largely by African nations. The additional troops will be supplied by the Congo. The government has to be able to stand against two major militant organizations. They are al-Shabab which has declared it’s allegiance to al-Qaeda, and Hizbul Islam. These two factions had been at war with each other but they have made a treaty with each other in odrer to fight and hopefully bring the government down.

The United Nations Operation in Somalia is known as UNOSOM. To the best of my knowledge none of our military ring troops are involved in this operation. Our Special Operations ring customers conduct raids, and snatch operations in Somalia from time to time but they don’t have anything to do with UN operations in that country.
