The US State Department is 85% sure that Saad bin Laden, one of Osama bin Laden’s sons has been killed this year in an attack by a US drone firing Hellfire missiles. Although we can’t confirm the death with 100% accuracy I have been around long enough to know that if it is put out it is probably true. I know from my experience that we do not rush to make these kinds of statements unless we can pretty much back them up.
This death is not a result of Saad bin Laden being sought out by our military but is a case of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As far as we know he was not heavily involved in terrorist activities like his father so his death can be viewed as collateral damage.
This incident should give the average person an idea of the kind of work that our servicemen and women are putting in in Operation Enduring Freedom. I wish that there was something which could be done to let everybody get a feeling of the harsh conditions that our troops have to operate in in Afghanistan. Whenever one of our soldiers in Afghanistan purchases an Operation Enduring Freedom ring we try to send an encouraging e mail to boost his morale.
