What is An Artillery Preparation?

arty prepIf you have never known what the term Preparation, Bombardment, or Prep means when it comes to military terminology well get it from me the custom military ring man today is your lucky day.

A preparation is an intense aerial bombardment which normally precedes a ground attack.  The purpose of the preparation is to confuse, disorganize, kill, wound, and cripple the enemy. In short it helps the ground forces with their job by weakening the enemy before ground units begin to do their work.

The preparation can consist of fires from Artillery, Naval Gunfire, Aerial Bombing, Mortars, or any combination of all of the above. It may last for hours or even days, depending on the overall situation. The preparation may also be used to decieve the enemy about where the attack will come from if the deception warrants the expenditure of ammunition. I used to like to mix in smoke rounds at the end of the preparation in order to blind the enemy to the force which was approaching them.

The preparation requires precise timing because you want to force the enemy to keep his head down until your forces are right on top of him. You also don’t want to bomb your own people so there is a fine line of coordination which has to be done.
