If you are not military or have never been affiliated with the military you may not be familiar with the use of smoke in military operations.
Military smoke can be delivered through a number of methods. It can be created by smoke generators, grenades, aircraft, tanks and other weapons platforms, and aircraft.
The main use of military smoke is to confuse the enemy, and to conceal your location or movement. It can also be used to mark areas or targets, and to provide a backdrop to help to see the enemy better. Smoke can also be used when you wish to break off contact with the enemy. You put up a smoke screen in front of you and withdraw behind it.
Military commanders have many options available to them with smoke. It can also work against you when you do not use it correctly. Commanders have to be mindful of things like air density and wind direction when they use smoke. I have been in operations where the enemy used so much smoke that we could hardly see more than a few feet in any direction.
Smoke also comes in different colors when it is used to mark targets or areas. I would like to tell you some war stories about how I have seed smoke used but don’t fret. I’m not going to entertain you with them at this time. Smoke is used by the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force. If you have ever been in any branch of service you can use your military ring to tell your smoke war stories.
