If you are wondering what in the world an FSO is, well let me tell you. FSO is the military abbreviation for Fire Support Officer. The Fire Support Officer is the advisor to the task force commander on all of the heavy firepower to include; Field Artillery, Naval Gunfire, and Close Air Support. This is one of the many jobs that I enjoyed when I was in the military and it was absolutely the most demanding. It was so demanding because you have to keep track of so many different activities at one time. There is so much coordination that has to be done. The thing that makes it so hard is that the situation is constantly changing and you have to keep so many different people aware of the changes. Half of the time you can’t reach them so this makes the job that much more frustrating.
Have you ever heard the saying “I love it when a plan comes together.” This was also the best job that I ever had because when things worked out it was the best feeling in the world. When we got devastating effects on the enemy it made all of the frustration and hard work worthwhile. When we fought the OPFOR in The National Training Center in California and beat them it was worth every minute of desert heat and days with no sleep. It was worth every minute of not being able to take out enough time to wash or eat. This definitely is a job that would be well commemorated with a Field Artillery custom military ring.
