The AGM-88 HARM Missile

harm missileThe AGM-88 High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile is an air to surface missile which is designed to home in on and destroy anti aircraft radar systems.

The purpose of this missile is to help to open a window for our aircraft to be free to use without fear of being picked up on radar. This allows them to attack enemy targets with less fear of being shot down. Aircraft carrying these missiles are typically sent in first to destroy the ground radar systems and all heck breaks loose when our other fighters and bombers come in to engage other targets.

Tactically you don’t try to kill all of the radar all of the time because there may be other more important targets that you want to give your attention to. You can’t kill everything all of the time anyway. You also don’t want to kill the radars too soon because you don’t want to give your enemy a chance to get back up and running before you strike him with other aircraft. Ideally what you want to do is open a window right at the time of attack for your planes to go thru. I try to think of it as the offensive line on a football team. They block to open a hole for the runner to go thru. This is the same basic concept. I bet that you all thought that military rings, and Air Force rings was the only subject that I could talk about. I don’t know a whole lot but the little that I do know is good.
