The name desert strike refers to a cruise missile and B-52 Bomber strike against Northern Iraq in 1996. This strike was a coordinated attack conducted by the USS Laboon, the USS Shiloh, and USAF bombers.
This attack was launched in response to an Iraqi Army offensive against the Kurdish population in the region. Although this operation had little obvious impact on th Iraqi forces it may have helped Saddam to make the decision to withdraw his forces from the area.
There were a total of 44 cruise missiles launched during the operation.
