The Taliban Threatens to Attack Afghan Polling Places

The Taliban in Afghanistan has warned that they will attack polling places during the upcoming elections later this month in an attempt to drive down voter turnout and establish control of the country. This is a critical test because it will determine who is actually in control.

I will concede that voter turnout will show who the civilian population has confidence in. In they are confident thay the Taliban can back its threats they won’t come out and vote. If they are confident in the ability of their new government and NATO to protect them they will come out and vote.

The Taliban definitely had the upper hand during the last election because voter turnout was sparse. This time the Afghan government will open fewer precincts in an effort to be able to maintain control. The smaller number of open precincts will mean that they can protect the voters who come out. Naturally they won’t oper the precincts in the areas where the Taliban is definitely in charge. I am sure that our military commanders there have a detailed plan put together for our military ring customers to protect the voters. We will see exactly what the deal is when the election comes.
