President Karzai has expressed his frustration with the way that things are going in Afgahnistan with his remarks that the US should focus on the Taliban in Pakistan rather than in Afghanistan.
His remarks parallel the way that I feel to a degree. I believe that the reason for the Taliban’s successes is that they are able to operate and recuperate unmolested in Pakistan and easily slip back and forth across the border to do their dirty work. We have not been able to mount an effective campaign against them in that country because the Pakistanis will not allow us to pursue them into their country.
It is really not in the best intrest of the Pakistanis to do much against the Taliban because of many reasons but the two biggest are the facts that they share a long relationship with the Taliban, and they will have to live with them long after we are gone.
Our military ring customers are doing a magnificent job of wiping out the Taliban when they engage them, but there are always many more waiting just across the border waiting for their chance to get into the fight.
