NATO has reached the desired number of military troops and policemen in Afghanistan which it feels is necessary to be able to maintain the gains that have been fought for up until now. Now I am talking about Afghan troops and policemen here.
Initially there were many problems with the quality and quantity of recruits that they were getting. One problem was the pay which was less than what the Taliban was offering. Another problem was drug use among recruits. Some of the steps taken to correct these problems were drug testing, revamping the training plan, and getting the recruits to take an oath of alleigance. These things led to visible improvement in the quality of the finished product however, corruption is the biggest issue remaining.
Police and soldiers don’t have a good reputation with the civilian population of the country right now which is the single biggest problem in the war. The US has been riding President Karzai pretty hard about the corruption but it will be very difficult to stop.
