The newest frontier for warfare is cyber space. The US government has determined that cyber warfare is such a trouble spot that it has created the new Cyber Command.
This vulnerability comes with technological advancement. An area which was not even thought about fifty years ago is now an area of major concern for the US military. A well planned and coordinated cyber attack could cripple our military and also cause serious damage the infrastructure of our country.
I served in the Army at the beginning of the computer age. At that time we were used to doing everything manually which certainly was mush less efficient and less accurate but more reliable in the sense that there was not much that an enemy could do to hinder our operations other than kill or wound us. As weapons and technology improved there was a need to spend much time training the soldier in the technical operation of the equipment and less time to train him or her on the mechanical aspects of solving the problem. The result of this is an Army which is pretty much ineffective if its computers don’t work. This is just the tradeoff that our government has had to take in order to improve technology.
The only real solution is to not allow ourselves to become vulnerable to cyber attack.
