The new Stryker combat vehicle which many of my army ring soldiers use in Iraq and Afghanistan has recently been upgraded to an A1 model which will soon be fielded. As with all military equipment, changes and improvements are necessary to adapt to ever changing warfare.
The problems with the old Stryker were mainly that its armor needed to be strengthed in many places. When extra armor was added to the vehicle and to the belly to protect the crew from IED’s the extra weight put a real strain on the engine and transmission. The added weight also made the vehicle heavier which made it more difficult to operate cross sountry.
The newer version of the Stryker answers these concerns first by using a heavier engine and transmission to pull the added heft. The suspension system has also been upgraded to support the heavier weight and to cause the belly of the vehicle to ride higher off of the ground to further shield the military ring customers inside from blast effects of IED’s.
The newer vehicle also has better sensors and communications equipment to protect the crew inside from blast.
