If you haven’t heard about this operation yet you are one of the minority because this is the most publicized operation in history. It really may not be the very most publicized military operation but the kicker is that it is being publicized before it has even started. US allies and Afghan officials are giving out details of the operation to the enemy right now.
The purpose of the publicity is to give the civilian population of Marjah and the surrounding area plenty of time to get out of the area if they want to leave. It also gives Taliban members time to make up their minds to leave if they want to. This is also an effort to reach out to the Taliban and hopefully set up an atmosphere where some sort of peace agreement can be reached shortly. The message to the Taliban is that if they decide to fight they can but it will be costly. Commanders are letting them know now that if they do decide to fight they can expect to take massive casualties.
The general concensus is that the Taliban will hide and try to wait out the assault. They may just try to wait until our forces leave the area and retake it. I don’t think that that will work because our intent will be to build the area up. Once we get a foothold we won’t relinquish control until the Afghan government is capable of standing on its own. http://www.militaryringexpress.com
