joint attackThe upcoming Offensive which is to take place in southern Afghanistan will heavily involve the Afghan Army. We are going as far as to say that it will be an Afghan led offensive. It is also being widely publicized. I thought about why all of the publicity about the attack and several reasons came to me why US planners are letting the enemy know that we are coming. Normally you want an attack to be as much of a surprise as possible, but in this case that is not so.

Announcing our intentions of attack first of all gives innocent civilians time enough to get out of the area. It puts our troops at greater risk because the element of surprise is lost but it serves to show that we are doing all that we can to save the lives of innocent civilians. Our Operation Enduring Freedom ring customers are aware that it also gives the Taliban time enough to get out of the area. It is a stronghold of the Taliban and if they choose to turn and run it will be very easy to take and hold. On the flip side of the coin though if they decide to hold the city (which I think that they will) they will have plenty of time to reinforce their positions and prepare for the attack. This won’t be good news to our military ring customers at all.
