Circular Error Probable (CEP)

cepThis is a term that I’ll bet not a lot of you out there are familiar with. My custom military ring customers who are Field Artillery will know about this term. So will those who served in branches of the service who dealt with missiles, rockets, etc.

To make it simple CEP is this; When you fire a missile, rocket, mortar, artillery round, or any type of weapon system the rounds are not all going to hit the target directly. Fifty percent of them will land in an area close and after you get farther away few of them will land outside of the area. The area where most will range within is known as the circular area of probability.

When I tried to read up on it the definition that I found really messed up my head. This is the way that I understood it when I was in the military so that is the way that I explained it. The CEP for 155mm artillery was 25 meters. (Now I’m not sure if I remember this correctly so correct me if I’m wrong). That meant that if all went well and nobody made a mistake all of your artillery would land within 50 meters of the target. Since artillery is meant to kill by fragmentation 50 meters is close enough.
