Some of you younger military ring customers may not remember this incident but I do. I was stationed in the 2/18th Field Artillery in Fort Sill Oklahoma at the time. This was the first of this type terrorist attack that I remember and it was a shock to many people.
This blast occured on October 23 1983 and resulted in the deaths of 220 US Marines and 18 of our Navy personnel along with about 79 French soldiers.
The attack was conducted by suicide bombers driving two seperate trucks. The blasts occurred about two minutes apart.
The bombing had the effect of causing the UN peacekeeping force to leave the country. In the aftermath we learned some lessons that we have applied to our outposts in trouble areas which have greatly helped to prevent this type of situation from ever occurring again. http://www.militaryringexpress.com
