See full size imageAll of my Marine Corps military ring customers can tell you that this term in its purest sense did not originate in the military.

“Gung Ho” represents the third and fifth syllables of the name of the Chinese Industrial cooperatives Association in the 1940′s, Chung Guo Gung Yeh Ho. Gung Ho was used as the abbreviation of the name. Gung means to work, and Ho means in harmony.

Marine Ltc Evans Carlson made this phrase famous when he used it as a motivating tool for his Second Raider Battalion. It just sounds so good dosen’t it? Well it quickly caught on and is still used today. When we hear it used in the military we equate its meaning to someone who has great enthuasiasm for his job or mission. GUNG HO baby GUNG HO!!!
