What is Meant by the Term Direct Action?

Terrorist Collage.jpgThis is one term that was not familiar to us custom military ring folks. We had heard it but now since we have studied it the definition is clear to us.

Direct action refers to any politically motivated activity by groups or governments to achieve political goals outside of the normal channels. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Let me say it the way that I understand it. It is a tactic that is meant to bring about a political change.

Direct action may target people, groups, or property. It is not necessarily violent, but I would call it radical. It is radical in the sense that it is not the normal way that things would be done. Direct action can include acts such as murder, kidnapping, or sabotage. It is not necessarily illegal, or military. It can be violent such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, or nonviolent such as picketting or boycotting a facility.
