The initial purpose of the Torpedo Boat was to use torpedos to destroy enemy ships. The concept was for a lighter, faster boat to be able to quickly get in close and deliver its payload before making a run out of harms way. They were initially very successful which led to the developement of the destroyer. the original name for the destroyer was “Torpedo Boat Destroyer.”
During WWII PT boats became less effective at their designed role because of increased overall fleet speed and the use if patrol aircraft. These boats took on a variety of other roles and remained effective at performing other tasks. The United States Navy began to use the racing style planing hulls on their PT Boats to help increase speed. They also used wood for the construction which saved steel for larger ships.
As warfare became more modern and longer range missiles came into use corvettes replaced PT Boats because the capability to be able to attack from greater distances replaced the need for pure speed.
This post is just a little bit of information for all of our readers in general but specifically for those United States Navy Military ring customers. We hope that you find it as interesting as we did.
