What in the World Was Operation Power Pack

presidential palaceOperation Power Pack was a US led invasion of the Dominican Republic in 1965. I wonder who in the world came up with the name power pack? This operation was mainly conducted by a marine invasion force which was primarily supported by elements of the 82nd Airborne Division, and some elements of the OAS.

This operation followed a period of political unrest in the country and initially was an attempt to evacuate US and other civilians from Santo Domingo.

President Johnson ordered US forces to restore order when it became apparent that leftist forces were about to defeat the pro government forces. The US did not want another communist country in the Carribbean. The operation was a low level conflict and fighting ended on Aug 31st 1965 when a truce was declared.

President Joaquin Balaquer was reelected in 1966 with US support and eventually was able to restore order.

This is certainly an event that I knew little of nothing about until recently. We have not had to create a custom military ring to commemorate this operation, and as time passes it looks like we may never do so, but if any of you out there want to do so we can certainly make it happen.
