This naval battle took place from May 4-8 1942, and was fought between the Japanese Navy and elements of the US and Australian Navies. The unique thing about this battle is that it was the first naval battle in which aircraft carriers were used to engage naval forces. It was also the first naval battle in which opposing naval ships never fired a shot directly at each other.
This battle was the US attempt to prevent the Japanese from establishing a foothold in the Solomon Islands. The US navy learned of the Japanese plan to occupy the islands with an invasion force, and was able to intercept it with its own naval force. During the battle both sides exchanged airstrikes over a period of several days. Both sides saw heavy losses during the battle but the US gained the tactical edge because it succeeded in stopping the Japanese invasion force. Consequently the Japanese were never to establish a military stronghold in the area. This was critical because allied forces were able to capitalize on Japanese military weakness in the area to launch the Guadalcanal and New Guinea campaigns. These campaigns were critical to reducing Japanese power in the Pacific Theatre and eventually led to the winning of the war by the US and its allies. This is one of many historic naval events that you can use a custom naval ring to commemorate.
