“Danger Close” is the term that the Field Artillery forward observer uses in his call for artillery to alert the fire direction center that the target that he wants obliterated is very close to him. In my day this was if the target was less than 600 meters away from the forward observer. This alerts the fire direction center to issue the command “Use Gunner’s Quadrant” to the gun chiefs.
Each gun chief will then take out a precision instrument called the gunner’s quadrant. He sets off the “quadrant’” or elevation of the tube on the instrument and seats it on the breech block of the tube. He then levels the bubbles of the gunner’s quadrant by refining the up and down direction of the tube. This insures an even greater accuracy in the distance that the shell travels, because the elevation of the tube when fired is one of the factors which influence the distance that the artillery shell travels.
If he dosen’t perform this action correctly he can kill a number of his own people. Each part of the field artillery team must perform exact functions or they will cause the deaths of friendly soldiers. Think about being in the field tired, hungry, cold, pressured, and having to move quickly because people’s lives depend on how well you do your job. There is absolutely no room for error under any circumstances regardless of whatever. There are many circumstances that those who have served will want to remember for life. The way to do this is to create your own custom military ring.
