The Modern Day Destroyer

destroyerThe destroyer is a fast and highly maneuverable warship which nowadays is capable of independant operations, but is normally used to protect larger ships (like Carriers) from attack. The destroyer may be capable of ship to ship, anti aircraft and anti submarine protection.

The modern destroyer is heavier and larger than most other ships and has superior firepower. this enables it to be used in many different roles, and to be equipped for many different missions. Destroyers are normally utilized in support of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious groups, and replenishment groups.

Modern destroyers may be equipped with cruise missiles, anti submarine helocopters, and other specialized equipment. If you look at the picture above you can see how the look of modern warships has changed over the years. Past warships would be bristling with gun tubes. Now ships are equipped with more modern missile defense and offensive systems so you don’t see a whole lot of gun tubes on any warship. If you or a loved one has served aboard a destroyer, or in support of a destroyer we can assist you in creating a custom US Navy ring to tell the story of your time in service.
