Operation Copper Cactus is the ongoing operation along our border with Mexico. This is a much needed boost to our Border Patrol and Customs agents because the National Guardsmen and Airmen who are assigned there will free them up to perform other duties.
Our border has been a sore subject here recently because of the increased violence which has been spilling over to our side. Many of our law enforcement personnel on this side of the border don’t feel that we have control of it. Drug cartels regurarily conduct their operations on this side of the border also. We are already using drones to help monitor large areas of the border. They have proven to be invaluable to our operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and hopefully they will be an asset to our border interdiction efforts.
Approximately 1,200 soldiers and airmen will be deployed for about a year to support this operation. They are in training as we speak and all of the assigned troops are our military ring customers who volunteered for the job. I understand that they will be monitoring some high tech surveillance equipment. If I were to guess at the purpose for the airmen I would venture to say that their primary duties will be to operate and monitor the drones which are already in use. I think that my guess is pretty accurate but don’t hold me to it.
