The Iranian government has acquired four new Ghadir class submarines to go along with the three Russian made submarines that they have already. They say that they have acquired the submarines to build up their defense capabilities. The subs are small and able to operate close to shore in relatively shallow water. The Iranians claim that they are able to fire submrines and missiles simultaneously. This is good I guess and I guess it is a big thing for them but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.
Maybe their submarine force would be a deterrent force for some small countries but it wouldn’t cause much of a problem for any of the larger navies in the world.
Any future war with Iran would probably result in a blocade of the gulf in an effort to enforce sanctions against them but their access to the gulf is just a minor part of any war equation.
If in fact the US ever had to block the coastal waters off of Iran our navy ring customers would not find their submarine force to be much of a threat.
