Who In the World Was Frank Sutton?

frank suttonThis face may not be familiar to some of you young bucks. I bet that many of you don’t even know who this man is. Frank Spencer Sutton was born in Clarksville TN on Oct 23 1923.  He was also known as Sergeant Vincent Carter who played the role of an overworked Marine DI who had the unfortunate job of trying to make a Marine out of Jim Neighbors “Gomer Plye.”

This was a hilarious comedy that I enjoyed watching as a child. I think that it might have helped recruitment for the Marine Corps. It certainly was popular among people of that day. The one thing that surprised me when I did the research for this post was that Mr. Sutton was never enlisted in the Marine Corps. He did enlist in the Army and served in many military campaigns during WWII.

Mr. Sutton played many minor roles during his acting career, but he is well known for his role as Sgt Carter. Mr Sutton died at the age of 50 in 1974 of a sudden heart attack.

I still watch reruns of this old program from time to time and still enjoy them. I was talking to some young soldiers today and they had never heard of the program or Frank Sutton. This brings me to this point. A custom military ring whether it is an Army ring or a Marine Corps ring will certainly help you to hold on to old memories.
