The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System was fielded by the US and allies in 1983. This system really proved itself during operation Desert Storm. The only drawback that this system has is that you can see the smoketrails from its rockets for a very long distance. So you can see the rocket coming and also where it was fired from. The tactic that is used to minimize danger to the crew is called shoot and scoot. In other words as soon as the rockets leave the tubes the MLRS is on the run. Even if you did see where the rockets came from the launcher will be gone before you can do anything about it.
The MLRS can use different types of rockets. The first rocket developed for its use contains a total of 644 bomblets. Each one is about the size and power of a hand grenade. The shell bursts in the air over the target and 644 grenades rain down on top of a 1000 meter radius which essentially kills everything in that area. Now let me add another twist. Each bomblet has a shaped charge inside of it. When it hits a vehicle the shaped charge will blow a hole in the vehicle. If it hits the ground the bomblet will pop up into the air and explode sending shrapnel over a wide area.
You can see one of the reasons that our soldiers are proud of what they can do with the equipment that we have in our inventory. Many will use a custom military ring to continue to show their pride once they get out of the military
