The History of The Hospital Ship

Posted February 24th, 2009 by OldWarrior

hospital shipHospital ships are normally operated by military forces and are used primarily near war zones to treat wounded soldiers.

The first hospital ship was the HMS Victory which became a hospital ship in December 1798. The USS Red Rover treated wounded soldiers from both sides during the US Civil War.

Modern hospital ships display large red crosses to show that they are protected from hostile fire under the Geneva Convention.

Hospital ships are crucial to our present efforts in the Persian Gulf. The personnel who serve on these ships are often overlooked and forgotten, but this is your tribute.
