awaiting refuellingThis was a UN authorized conflict between Iraq and a UN coalition of 34 nations. The United States used elements from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard to execute the UN mandate. These US units staged in Saudi Arabia for operation Desert Shield and began to execute the UN mandate (officially) on Jan 17th 1991 with a massive air campaign against the Iraqi Army. The ground offensive began on February 24th 1991 with an invasion of both Iraq and Kuwait with a rapid advance deep into both countries. Within 100 hours the objectives of the campaign were met and much of the Iraqi army was destroyed.
