The Orgin of The Name Buffalo Soldier

Posted January 14th, 2009 by OldWarrior

“Buffalo Soldier” is the nickname given to the soldiers of the US 10th Cavalry Regiment by the Native American tribes that they were so often used to fight against. The name  later applied to the six all black regiments of US Army soldiers.

There are several different theories as to how the black soldiers became known as “buffalo soldiers.” One story that I was told by an Apache Indian descendant was that when they rode it sounded like a herd of thundering buffalo. The Cheyenne translation used for buffalo means wild buffalo. This name was said to be given to them because of their fierce fighting ability. A third theory is that the name was given to them because of their dark curly hair which resembled the hair of the buffalo. The real reason may never be known but you can make sure that your personal story is always known by creating your own custom military ring.
