The Huey belongs to a large family of helicopters which were produced by Bell starting in 1956. They produced copters which were used by civil and military authorities. The chopper came into its own during the Vietnam War when the US military found that they were perfect for use in the jungles of Vietnam. They could take off from small clearings and land in them also. This was good for many different reasons, namely the transportation of troops and supplies around the battlefield.
Troops, artillery, food, ammunition etc, could be moved quickly to precise locations on the battlefield as needed. Thie also enabled commanders to use troops where they were needed the most thus providing firepower where it was needed the most at the precise tine that it was needed.
One of the biggest benefits was that wounded personnel could be moved almost immediately from the battlefield to hospitals where they could get the help that they needed. This resulted in the saving of many of the lives of our troops and remains the most viable means of transporting the wounded even until this day.
