The Harrier is used exclusively by the Marines as far as the US Military is concerned. This jet is a ground support fighter jet which has the capability of taking off and landing vertically. The advantage that this gives is that it doesn’t need a long runway in order to take off and land.
This is important because it can remain closer to the action when Marine ground troops are engaged in an operation in enemy territory. The troops need ground support but there may not be an available airfield there. The Harriers’ will be able to take off and land from small natural clearings or hastily constructed clearings. This makes air power more responsive to the needs of ground troops and more easily concealed from enemy observation. The Marines also have recently developed the Osprey which is a transport plane that works on a very similar principle. It uses it’s propellers to take off like a helicopter then switches once it is airborne to fly like a regular prop plane.
